Poplar Spring Forts
The forts built at the beginning of October 1864, shortly after the conclusion of the battles at Peebles and Pegram Farms. Positions of the Confederate divisions and elements of the Fifth and Ninth Corps are from October 1, shown faded in color for reference. Pegram Farm was destroyed and replaced by Fort Welch and environs, so the former location is marked by an overwritten label "Pegr" for reference. Notice the extension of the U.S. Military Rail Road to what became Patrick Station near the Poplar Spring Church. These forts are now called the Federal "Fish Hook" Line and have been given much attentionby the National Park Service.
